What Swiss Ephemeris is, and why your chart depends on it

If you have compared astrology apps for long enough, you have probably seen the phrase Swiss Ephemeris and nodded past it. It is worth slowing down on. It is one of the few concrete things you can actually check about an app's accuracy.

What an ephemeris is

An ephemeris is a table of where the planets are, moment by moment. Astronomers have kept them for centuries, first by hand and now by computer. The Swiss Ephemeris is the modern digital one that most professional astrology software is built on. So when astrologers talk about a chart being computed correctly, this is usually the standard they are measuring it against.

Why it matters for a birth chart

Your chart is a snapshot of the sky at one instant, seen from one spot on Earth. Every meaning in it hangs off those positions. Place a planet even a degree off and it can slip into the wrong sign or the wrong house, and the whole reading built on top quietly describes the wrong life. Accuracy here is not a finishing touch. It is the foundation the rest stands on.

What good looks like

An app does not have to run Swiss Ephemeris itself to be accurate. It has to match it, and it has to be willing to show you by how much. A trustworthy app diffs its own engine against that reference and publishes the result; that willingness to be checked is what separates an accurate astrology app from a merely confident one. For scale, the gaps worth trusting are measured in arcseconds and arcminutes, far finer than the width of a glyph inked on a chart wheel.

Does an astrology app have to use Swiss Ephemeris to be accurate? No. It has to match Swiss Ephemeris, not necessarily run it. What matters is that the app diffs its own positions against that reference and is willing to show you by how much. An app that publishes its accuracy has earned trust; one that only asserts it has not.

If no such page exists, the claim is unverified, and unverified is the one thing accuracy is not.
